Access by road to Cowan is via the Pacific Highway which traverses Cowan north to south. Cowan has its own railway station served by the Central Coast & Newcastle Line of the NSW TrainLink network.

Cowan is home to "Pie in the Sky" a good old-fashioned Aussie Pie Shop, operating for around 30 years which is open Monday to Friday 9am-5pm, Sat and Sun 8am-5pm.
