Academy Singers - Peace and Remembrance

Directed by Paul Terracini, this is a special concert in recognition of Armistice Day with a selection of inspiring choral music.

With one hundred years of commemorating the end of World War 1, we are reminded that peace has been an enduring concern across many countries and has proved elusive. Poets and songwriters weave stories that are powerful in depicting human sentiment around war and peace and their music filters through to all levels of society. Musical Director, Dr. Paul Terracini, has selected inspiring songs that illustrate that music is timeless and has no boundaries.

Popular 20th century war songs like Keep the Home Fires Burning were important for soldiers to keep their spirits up on the battlefield, and yet a hundred years later it can still invoke strong emotion in us. I Didn't Raise My Boy to be a Soldier expresses the grief of a mother in a way that can also stir the pacifist in each of us. The African-American Spiritual We Shall Walk Through the Valley in Peace gives us insight into another sphere of social injustice and human exploitation.

In contrast to these modern songs, the choir will also present works from the Church tradition, including part of Giovanni da Palestrina's 16th century Missa Brevis and Samuel Wesley's Thou Wilt Keep Him in Perfect Peace.

The choir will be accompanied on keyboard by Jane Andino.
