Focus on NDIS in Macquarie

People with a disability were given the floor last week at a community meeting at Katoomba hosted by Susan Templeman MP and the Shadow Minister for Families and Social Services Jenny Macklin MP.

“The feedback we got was mixed with some people with disability saying they were happy with their packages and enjoying the benefits of the NDIS,” Ms Templeman said.

“However other people indicated that there are some significant issues with planners, inconsistencies between plans and problems with the online payments system,” she said.

“One of the worst areas of concern is around transport allowances. Given the distances between our towns and Penrith these are inadequate to allow people to get to things like medical appointments.

“I’ve had many people with disability approaching my office to express the difficulties faced in getting the NDIS to work for them.

“The NDIS is all about giving people with disability choice and control over their lives, it shouldn't be putting vulnerable families under stress.”

The Shadow Minister for Social Services, Jenny Macklin said that everyone needed to work together to make sure we get the best possible NDIS.

“Clearly there is a need to ensure that the NDIA – the Agency that manages the NDIS - is properly resourced. We don’t want people with disability waiting for hours to get through to talk to someone over the phone,” Ms Macklin said.

“People with disability, their families and carers have been waiting their whole lives for the NDIS and it’s important that we get it right,” she said.
