Do you know these people?

Help us unravel the past and dig up the future!

Everyone has a reason for wanting to dig into the past – from researching ancestry and family secrets or building the family tree, to discovering the history of your local area or home. Whether you’re a family historian or just starting out on the journey, delving into the stories can be exciting and challenging.

There are many records available containing information about people and places relevant to your family or local history research.  Your search will be enhanced by having some idea about the people you wish to search for, the places they may have lived, and the time period they may have lived there.

Some of the most common records people search include: birth, marriage and death records, cemetery records, electoral rolls, Indigenous family history, shipping, passenger and crew records, convict records, war services records, newspapers and newspaper indexes, indexes to inquests and probate, censuses, naturalisation, land records musters and parish records – the list is endless and the chase could take years!

Head to Penrith Regional Gallery & The Lewers Bequest on Sunday 24 September from 2-4pm for Into the Archives: Storytelling and Research, a free public forum at which local historians, curators, archivists and research librarians will share their expertise and information to reveal the process of digging into the archives to help bring the past to life.

Help us out along the way too – if you recognise anyone in this photo or have a copy of it at home, please contact us so we can start to unravel the history behind this photo found while artist-in-residence at the Penrith Regional Gallery, Ian Milliss worked through archival material from the Gallery Collection to tell a more complex story of a particular time and place that was Emu Island!
