Keeping Your Hawkesbury Home Safe and Sound

Hawkesbury is one of the safest areas in which to live in New South Wales - according to research compiled by the NSW Bureau of Statistics and other government bodies. Peace and quiet, a low robbery and break in and enter rate, and declines in stealing and malicious damage to property have made it easy to rest nice and easy in this beautiful riverside area. Of course, there is plenty that homeowners can do to up the safety of their home. From installing home surveillance to choosing fire-resistant materials, you can breathe easy when you are at home and away, knowing that your risk of loss or damage can be reduced to less than zero.

Keeping an Eye Out for Strangers

If you are in to crime stories and documentaries then you know that on more than one occasion, having a home camera can save the day. Research has shown that over 80% of burglars will check out whether or not a home has an alarm/camera prior to attempting a break and entry. Home surveillance footage can be of aid in NSW courts of law, but they can also be used to keep an eye on vulnerable family members such as seniors and children. Since home security video can be streamed to your smartphone, you can keep an eye on your home regardless of where you are.

Reducing the Drowning Risk

Australian rivers have claimed over 1,000 lives over the past two decades, but official data shows that when it comes to children aged under five in NSW, home pools are actually the greatest risk. A report by the NSW Government, Royal Life Saving and Keep Watch warns that common issues include non-existent or faulty fencing, with many pools being completely unfenced and others having inefficient barriers. Portable pools are another problem; many are simply not fenced. Not only should all homes with pools have safety compliant fences, but any temporary pool that cannot be fenced should simply not be installed. For added safety measures, pool nets and alarms should be used.  The latter emit a loud sound when a child or pet falls into an unsupervised pool. The receiver unit can be mounted in your home up to 200 feet from the pool unit.

Eliminating Risks of Falls and Burns

Homes in Hawkesbury come in a variety of styles, including single-, two-storey, and split-level. If you have a staircase and you have children or pets, ensure these are kept safe with baby gates. Also ensure there are no uncomfortable level shifts between rooms, cracks in falling, or any other surface problem that could pose a fall risk for children and adults. The 'open plan kitchen' trend is as big in Hawkesbury as it is in the rest of Australia. While there is no doubt that the aesthetics are second-to-none, open kitchens can pose a higher safety risk for burns and dropped objects. Children can also wander into kitchens in an unguarded moment and unwittingly touch a burning hot stove. Child-friendly toppers can be placed on stoves, and families can also opt for stoves with back rather than front burners. Gates between central islands and benchtops can also be used to seal off the cooking area so that little children cannot freely walk in. Finally, storage of dangerous items (which should be kept out of the reach of children) is key.

Reducing the Chance of Slips

The Hawkesbury area is prone to floods in low lying areas. This can lead to the growth of algae, moss, and other organisms that can make pavements, garden paths, etc. more slippery. To boost safety, regular cleaning with pressure water jets is key. Areas such as outdoor steps, poolside flooring, and driveways should be given due importance.

Hawkesbury is known to be one of NSW's safest places to reside. Nevertheless, home safety should be a priority for all home dwellers, even in secure communities. From installing alarms to ensuring pool gates are in working order, you can ensure that your home remains as safe indoors as it is outdoors.
