Get cosy as Autumn slips slowly into the cooler winter months and find a spot on the new red velvet chesterfield sofas to soak up the sounds of local singer-songwriters and musicians as they bring you an eclectic range of styles from funky soul and blues to smooth tunes, folk and acoustic pop.
At The Joan’s next Friday Night Lights is on 5 May at 5.30pm. Rhiannon Atkinson Howard will bring the sounds of Merpire to life – a cross between a singing, ukulele-playing mermaid and your everyday vampire.
With influences from music greats including Joni Mitchell, Stevie Nicks, Sarah Blasko, Oh Daughter, Kimbra, Laura Marling, Lucy Rose and Led Zeppelin, Merpire takes the typical sound of the ukulele and wraps it into new uncharted sounds.
Full of haunting melodies and intricate harmonies, Merpire will take you on a gentle journey that’s lost in time in the ebb and flow of heart-ache, the idea of love, death and the observations of humans. Her latest release, Beneath Dark Waves, is a collection of love songs and stories written for ukulele. You hear an exploration and experimentation with different sounds, synths, guitar pedals and body percussion, which resonates with the growing maturity and unique style of Merpire’s voice. Her first video clip, Mister Horatio, features a rhyming song that tells the story of a man who collects pistachio shells. Expect to hear an almost normal world, bent towards a rainbow of madness!
So whatever your penchant - Indie, pop, acoustic or rock and if you like the idea of seeing more amazing artists for FREE on a Friday evening keep an eye out for Friday Night Lights performances.
