The Joan’s 2020 Kids & Families season explores what it means to be human; and to connect with the world around us. It’s filled with journeys of friendship and rites of passage. Surprises and laughs. From the internet and video games, to inventions, technology, magic and imagination.

The Kids & Families season will explore what it means to belong, how young people make sense of the world, and how to find their place in it. It keeps fun squarely in the picture; with plenty of hands-on opportunities to build, discover, invent and create, because a little bit of alchemy adds a whole lot of magic.

In 2020 there are three robots – two of them girls, the third created by a girl, as well as a play inspired by kinetic art and new ways to use everyday objects. We move into absurdity with a brand-new live show based on the Andy Griffiths books, ending the season on a whimsical note with a classic Australian children’s tale told through live-action puppetry.

The first show kicks off in the April school holidays with Ann-Droid The Wonderful Adventures of a Robot Girl – for the kids who have a passion for video games and all things technology. Eccentric inventor Alfred invents a robot girl, Ann, who is tasked with completing a mission: to collect the lost creatures. This show combines theatre with animation in a modern take on the Pinocchio story. Recommended for ages 4 and up, Ann-Droid will show on 22 & 23 April at 10am & 12pm.

In June audiences of all ages go on a rambunctious adventure filled with robot antics, laughter, daring rescues and bewildered parents in My Robot. When Ophelia moves with her family to the seaside, she’s not impressed. She doesn’t like the beach, misses her old home and thinks the people in this town are pretty strange. While unpacking her room she discovers a mysterious box full of gadgets, parts and pieces, and a strange note that reads ‘You. Make. Me.’ Her curiosity gets the better of her and spends all night assembling the objects into a robot with a typewriter chest and an alarm clock heart. Don’t miss what happens next on 3 June at 12pm & 6pm and 4 June at 10am & 1pm.

In August, little ones aged 2 – 7 can witness a tale about unexpected friendship in the acclaimed Windmill Theatre Company show Beep. In Mort’s Village everything has its place, every day is the same and everyone likes it that way. Until one morning… he meets an unexpected guest. Stunning set design, gentle storytelling, music and puppetry all combine to tell the story of Beep, and what happens when someone new comes to town. Showing across four shows on 27 August at 12pm & 6pm and 28 August at 10am & 12pm.

The October school holidays sees an adventurous show take to the stage for the kids aged 6 - 12. Loaded with groovy gadgets, naughty puppets and madcap clowning, Loose Ends is a show built from hard rubbish and op-shop treasures, and full of unexpected situations. With a touch of Wallace and Gromit and Mr. Bean combined, Loose Ends uses everyday objects and turns them into something magical. Showing 2 & 3 October at 10am & 12pm; with hands-on workshops for kids provided by the show creators on 1 October!

Andy Griffiths’ universally celebrated book series JUST will finally land on stage in a new dazzling production that vividly and hilariously brings the stories to life. Just Live on Stage! brings us everything from invisibility pills and Mudmen, to vomiting dogs and death-defying balloon rides. JUST tricking. JUST annoying. JUST stupid. JUST crazy. JUST disgusting. JUST shocking. Just unmissable - showing over four huge shows on 6 & 7 November at 10am & 12pm.

And finally, in November, acclaimed children’s theatre company Monkey Baa returns to our stages for a live rendition of the classic picture book Edward the Emu. Upbeat and whimsical, this work will explore themes around envy, identity, belonging and self-belief in an engaging 50-minute theatre work which includes puppetry, narration and music. Showing on 20 November at 12pm & 6pm and 21 November at 10am & 12pm, recommended for kids aged 4 – 9.

All tickets are $25, both for an adult and a child. A family ticket (must include one adult) is $90. Subscribers to Kids & Families shows are guaranteed first dibs on seats and receive discounts on all tickets. Generally, infants aged under two do not require a ticket to attend performances at The Joan provided they can sit on a parent’s lap.

Unique and special memories are made and shared in our Kids & Families Series– a gift that lasts forever; hurry and book for you and your little ones now!
