The thirty-two young Western Sydney musicians of the Penrith Strings program will take to the stage alongside their mentors from the Australian Chamber Orchestra (ACO) and Penrith Symphony Orchestra (PSO), to present a concert together at the Joan Sutherland Performing Arts Centre on Sunday 21 May, 3pm.

The concert showcases the highly-successful Penrith Strings program, in which the students receive intensive training and mentoring in workshops and rehearsals with the professional musicians of the ACO, and lead musicians from the PSO.

This month’s concert includes a delightful and varied selection of beautiful string music from the classical notes of Mozart, through to the contemporary sounds of Paul Stanhope.

The students, together with their mentors, will perform music from Austrian composer Amadeus Mozart’s light and entertaining Divertimento in F major: 11 Andante, 111 Presto; Grieg’s beautiful, bittersweet Vaaren (or Last Spring) and violinist Geminiani’s dance-like La Folia variations.

The ACO Ensemble, featuring musicians Thibaud Pavlovic- Hobba, violin 1; Benjamin Adler, violin 2; Nathan Greentree viola; and, Daniel Yeadon, cello, will perform three works: Mendelssohn’s richly romantic and passionate String Quartet in A minor; Haydn’s D major, Op 76, No. 5:1 Allegretto, IV. Finale Presto; and, Australian composer Paul Stanhope’s Morning Star, a stirring piece inspired by his personal response to the rich traditions of the great Australian Central Arnhem Land.

The Penrith Strings program is the result of a partnership between the Australian Chamber Orchestra, Penrith Symphony Orchestra and the Joan Sutherland Performing Arts Centre, with support from the Crown Resorts Foundation’s Western Sydney Arts Initiative.

The program is a valuable addition to the existing activities of the two local arts organisations, including the music education programs of The Joan. Attracting young musicians from throughout Western Sydney and the Blue Mountains, it adds diversity and opportunity to the cultural life of Penrith. By creating orchestral training opportunities, the program has led to ten Penrith Strings members having already gained opportunities to perform in Penrith Symphony Orchestra concerts and will culminate in 2018 with Penrith’s first youth Symphony Orchestra.

The program inspires the students by exposing them to world-class performances by the ACO and its emerging artists’ ensemble, the ACO Collective.

Tickets are available at the box office at The Joan, online or by phoning 02 4723 7600. All ticket sale proceeds go toward supporting the Penrith Strings program.
