Francis Henshall becomes minder to Roscoe Crabbe, a London gangster, in Brighton to collect money from mobster Charlie ‘the duck’ Clench, who had arranged for his daughter Pauline to marry Roscoe. But Roscoe is really his sister Rachel posing as her own dead brother, who’s been killed by her boyfriend Stanley Stubbers. And Pauline isn’t in love with Roscoe – she’s in love with over-the-top amateur actor Alan Dangle.

Holed up at The Cricketers’ Arms, the permanently ravenous Francis spots the chance of an extra meal ticket and takes a second job with Stanley Stubbers, who is hiding from the police and waiting to be re-united with Rachel. To prevent discovery, Francis must keep his two guvnors apart. Simple, right?

Throw in some jazz music, secret letters, a doddering waiter with a pace-maker, and Francis’ pursuit of his twin passions – Dolly (Charlie’s feminist bookkeeper) and food –and mayhem ensues in this hilarious British comedy.
